Established in the 1960s by the Hamersley Iron mining company as a sea based export location for iron ore. Now the unique and world-class port also provides the loading facilities for the Dampier Salt operations and Woodside Liquefied Natural Gas, as well as safe, calm beaches for family recreation activities, including boating, windsurfing, diving and fishing.
About the end of July or early August each year, Dampier hosts the most exciting game fishing competition in Australia - The Dampier Classic. This competition has been run for some years and attracts a great number of enthusiasts, many of whom come back year after year.
