Situated at the mouth of the Norman River, the town is basically in two parts. Karumba Point which faces on to the Gulf and Karumba town itself which is on the Norman River.
It is the only stretch of beach which can be reached by a sealed road in the Gulf Savannah. Well known for fishing and prawning, the area is also rich in bird life, especially after the “wet season”. Karumba was once a stopover for the Empire Flying boats en route from Sydney to London; later it was a RAAF base for Catalina Flying Boats.
